Big day Dolphin fishing in Key Largo

7/1/08

We had a big day fishing on Tuesday the first of July out of Key Largo Florida. The weather has cooperated almost every day in June and looks like July will be just as pleasant. Sean and I headed out around 7:00 a.m. with our crew of anglers. It didnt take long when we reached the gulf stream current when we spotted a group of sheerwaters(what we call tuna birds) working a small area of the water. They were swooping down trying to eat baitfish that the dolphin(mahi-mahi) were chasing. Once we got close to the birds, I quickly stepped up to the tower, where I could get a better look. As we trolled closer, I could see the dolphin swimming and chasing the flying fish. I pointed to where they were at and Sean quickly cast a small pilchard(live bait) to the fish. The bait didnt even hit the water when the dolphin exploded on it. We were hooked up instantly. As the 5 to 8 pounder jumped around , I could see at least 30 to 50 other Dolphin swimming towards the boat. Our anglers quickly hooked many other Dolphin and the action was fast and furious. We landed 20 Dolphin in a matter of minutes. Once we cleaned up and regrouped ,I gazed through the binoculars and spotted another set of tuna birds working an area about a mile away. We quickly trolled over there and before we could get close both flat lines went screaming. Double header 10 pounders. Dolphin fishing off of Key largo that day was just incredible. We managed to catch our limit of Dolphin by 12:00 p.m. The rest of the day off Key Largo was spent trying to raise a billfish(marlin or sailfish). We didnt have much luck with that , but after a day like we had, noone cared. It was time to head back to Key Largo and kick back with some cold ones and clean some fish.
