Key Largo offshore fishing report December 2009

12/22/09

We have been seeing some of the best offshore fishing thus far offshore of Key Largo this season and it will probably get even better as this early season moves on. In two days of offshore fishing we have released 16 sailfish caught 3 tuna, one yellowfin tuna weighing 103 lbs. and a handful of mahi-mahi. On our first day of fishing Jeff Heitman and his family from Naples, Florida our anglers braved the rainy and windy weather to try and catch some sailfish. We traveled 15 miles north of the marina where the sailfish bite has been going off. It was rainy really heavy so we wer'nt able to kite fish since the kites won't fly in the wind. My mate Chris and I decided to flat line fish, just slow trolling live sardines and google-eyes from the outriggers. We wern't fishing for about five minutes when we had our first sailfish up chasing one of our sardines. It hit the bait so hard that it knocked the bait off the hook and swam away with a free meal. We continued to fish and after about an hour with nothing we decided to move somewhere else. As we brought all our lines in and I started to run offshore we spotted some birds working on the surface. It looked like they might be over a school of Mahi but as I got closer I spotted many dorsal fins from sailfish. A large group of sailfish had balled up a bunch of sardines and were taking turns feeding. We quickly started casting live baits into the middle of the sailfish and were hooking up instantly. Our anglers caught and released five sailfish from that round of battle. After that was over we moved around looking for more sailfish. We spotted several others but did not get any bites out of them. The rain finally quit so we were able to put our kites out. Once we put out six baits on the kites my mate, Chris started screaming "big yellowfin, right middle!"
